20s and 30s experimental film- film footage put to music without a narrative. there are no narratives, they simply matched it with something that fits with the sound. 

40s, When film musical began, they combined acting, music dancing, performance, miming is what happened in musical. in those days, musicals were very popular and important. 

Soundies are jukebox of artists performing and this was during the 50s. it was not enough for the audience to just hear them on a radio or television, they needed more, to bond with the artists. this was their only opportunity to see these artists in the 50s

the 60s, this is when artists like Bob Dylan and the Beatless began to make films. this is slightly similar to the musical but its made simply for the purpose of promoting the artist. 

in the 70s, people such as David Bowie and Queen took the performance further and used TOTP.

1981 MTV begins-visual promotion becomes hugely important
