Album cover analyses Katie Perry
This is an album cover for Katy Perry, again following the same genre as the song we have chosen. The first thing you notice about the album cover is the image of the artist and the setting she has been placed in. The setting is of a very traditional homely American backyard, complete with picket fence and surrounding flowers. The setting is over the top with all the images included to make it seem wholesome. The sky although blue does have lots of grey clouds suggesting that not all is perfect. Katy Perry is known for her desire to take images and subvert them to shock and surprise her audience. The props of lounger and record player are old fashioned and further suggest the girl in the picture is of a previous age. Katy Perry is obviously a modern pop star but she enjoys playing around with the image.
The main image is of the artist, it is a long shot. This shows her whole body but also makes part of the setting around her. She is in a relaxed pose, sprawled out on a sun bed, suggesting that she is in control of he own destiny. She is wearing a sophisticated hat and short summer clothing. This makes her appear desirable but with an innocence. She is looking directly at the camera in a posed shot, that has been carefully choreographed. It also establishes a relationship between the artist and audience.
The lighting highlights the main image to such an extent that she almost becomes a 3D image, this shows her importance to the surrounding picture. Framing is used as the rest of the background is in low light around the artist.
The writing used for the artist is in a pink, bold and bubbly font. The name of the album is at the bottom and is much smaller, but of a similar font. The curvy font represents femininity and innocence and is therefore in keeping with the rest of the cover.
The colours used in the overall cover are bright for the main image but more muted for the surroundings, highlighting her importance. Pink is used as the main colour which symbolises the femininity and lightheartedness of the music and artist. The bright blue hat that she is wearing links her to the blue sky above, making her part of nature. The white picket fence emphasises the traditional, innocent feel of the cover.
