Rhythm and Blues was and still is a term used for a number of post-war American popular music forms. The term is credited to Jerry Wexler when he was editing the charts in Billboard magazine (1947). The term was used in the chart listings from 1949 onwards and the charts in question encompassed a number of contemporary forms that emerged around that time.
Rock music has been a volatile, unpredictable creature that has constantly redefined and reinvented itself since its emergence in the late 1940s. Not surprisingly, then, it can be extremely difficult to apply a straightforward definition to such a restless musical format.
We have chosen the song 'Cha Cha Slide' which is part of the genre Dance- Pop, therefore I will be researching into this genre. I wish to see how the song fits into the genre in general and the features that it has that are characteristic.
Main features of Dance- Pop are:
- Up tempo- Used in clubs
- Catchy songs, easy pop based lyrics
- Memorable features
- Well produced
- Importance of beats
By the 1990s Dance- Pop was well established and developed even more by borrowing from other genres, such as R&B and techno. These included the electronic device of Auto-Tune which manipulated the voice and was used by stars such as Cher. Euro-disco and Urban music also influenced Dance-Pop music with artists such as Madonna. Major artists and bands arose at this time, such as Britney Spears and The Spice girls.
Nowadays the genre is not as influential but is still popular at certain events and clubs. It has also become part of music history. It is heavily influenced by House music and Electropop. Modern artists include Rihanna and Katy Perry.
